St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest yearly events celebrated worldwide. While the biggest celebrations happen in Dublin, there are many other St. Patrick’s Day parties that go on all over the world.
Every March 17th millions of non Irish put on their green attire and pretend to be Irish for a day, which usually involves drinking a lot…all in the name of an Irish Saint.
Wearing green has become a staple of St. Patrick’s Day, but originally the holiday was associated with the color blue. It’s thought that the change to green happened because of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle,” the green in the Irish flag and the shamrock, or clover.
Beer is one of the most widely consumed beverages on St. Patrick’s Day.
While the Irish beer ‘Guinness’ remains a top St. Patty’s Day choice, a disturbing trend of consuming green beer, dyed with food coloring seems to be very popular world wide…it isn’t very often you’ll catch a true Irish lad or lass drinking a green beer!
I haven’t had the opportunity to spend a St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, but the one I remember the most was in Key West, Florida. It was in an Irish pub called “Irish Kevin’s” on Duval Street (the main street of Key West).
It has a sign inside that says-“I Came….I Drank…I Don’t Remember”
Well I can’t say I remember all of the night (it was back in 2004 after all!), but I do remember all the laughing, cheering and good times. Not to mention all the girls (and boys) with there “Kiss Me I’m Irish” badges and temporary tattoos plastered all over themselves and not forgetting the Shamrock Beads…and of course the huge Ireland colored flag hats, very similar to the way us Aussies celebrate Australia Day, its funny how two countries that are so far apart can celebrate there country in similar ways.
I do vaguely remember that there was an awesome band and then some kind of Karaoke…. Not sure if there was meant to be karaoke or just a result of too much St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
What have you got planned for the 17th of March.
